Editing services are offered in tiered packages as outlined below. Turnaround times are quoted on a case-by-case basis and are a rough estimate only. If my schedule isn’t full, I’ll attempt to get your manuscript back to you more quickly. If the manuscript needs more work than is evident in a sample, more time may be required for an edit, in which case, I will contact you promptly. PLEASE do not schedule a launch until you’ve received your first round of edits, as the editing process is different for every manuscript. Each editing package listed below includes one round of edits. With the exception of a line editing package, additional rounds will incur additional charges, but are available as needed.
($0.01 per word/$2.50 per 250-word page/$10.00 per 1,000 words)
Included in the proofread: check for missing or extra spaces, improper formatting, chapter headings, typos.
Proofreading is the final stage of your editing process. I do not suggest skimping on substantive/content edits, line edits, or copy edits. Proofreading will not fix your manuscript enough to make it ready for publication, it is simply a last pass for catching mistakes not caught in previous edits and should never be considered a viable substitute for a thorough edit.
($0.02 per word/$5.00 per 250-word page/$20.00 per 1,000 words)
Included in the copy edit: grammar, punctuation, and spelling
A review of your manuscript for grammar errors, punctuation errors, commonly confused words (there, their, they’re), wordiness, style consistency, misspellings, and awkward or unclear wording.
Copy editing is the preferred choice for writers who have well-formed sentences and a firm grasp of sentence structure in their manuscript. A proper copy edit should follow a developmental/substantive/content edit.
($0.03 per word/$7.50 per 250-word page/$30.00 per 1,000 words)
Sentence Structure and Flow plus Copy Edit (above)
An exhaustive review of your manuscript includes suggestions for rewriting awkward or improperly formed sentences or logical order of your organization. Your manuscript will be evaluated for cliches, repetitious words or phrases, shifts in tense or agreement, consistency, word flow, and logic as well as grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors. Choose this option if you would like assistance rewriting or reorganizing your manuscript on a line-by-line basis. This is a no-holds-barred edit, so don’t choose this kind of editing if you can’t handle red marks or suggestions. ;) If you want this editing package, schedule time to make your corrections well in advance of your launch and I will happily look over your corrected manuscript one more time to catch any errors made in the correction stage.
Note: For every editing level, suggestions may be made in the case of glaring errors or inconsistencies. Any suggestions beyond the included features of your chosen package lie outside the scope of the editing option and are offered solely at my discretion because I’m fanatical about turning out shiny manuscripts.
Although errors in logic or plot inconsistencies may be noted in your edit, this does not replace the need for having a substantive/developmental edit of your work. The intricacies of this type of editing are best left to a dedicated content editor. If you need a recommendation, I’d suggest Annetta Ribken, the story wizard. She lives for story lines and has a stellar track record for whipping even the most convoluted plot lines into shape.
Fees are based on both the tiered level of the chosen editing package as well as the depth and complexity of your manuscript. For your convenience, an initial evaluation of your manuscript will be given at the time of your price quote. To receive your initial evaluation, the first chapter, up to 1,500 words, of your longer manuscript or 15% of your shorter manuscript as well as a brief synopsis should be submitted per the guidelines in the submissions section.
If you choose to have a hard copy of your manuscript edited, additional charges may be incurred to cover mailing fees.
All documents, regardless of word count, begin at a base fee of $20.00 US.
Discounts are available for repeat clients as well as for all works exceeding 50k words.
Still feel you can’t afford to have your work edited? I am happy to make payment arrangements, especially for repeat clients who have developed a good reputation for prompt payment.
Prices do not include rush, mailing, printing, or PayPal fees.
Payments are accepted by PayPal (preferred) or money order. If you are a local client, I’ll accept cash, but please don’t attempt to send cash through the postal service. Barter arrangements are on a case-by-case basis, therefore payment methods will be discussed before the agreement is signed.
I can edit hard copies or process edits through Microsoft Word. Hard copy edits require additional turnaround time and will incur extra fees to cover mailing and printing expenses.
Documents, whether submitted digitally or via hard copy should be formatted in Times New Roman, 12pt, and should be double-spaced. Please include your name (or the pseudonym under which your manuscript will be published) , word count, and genre in the upper left corner on the first page of your document.
Any unsolicited manuscripts that do not adhere to these formatting guidelines will be deleted upon receipt.
